Impasse is a game of two-option questions, made by Hang Five Ltd. There are no accounts: we never ask for your name, email address or anything else about you. This page explains what we do collect, why, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it.
The short version
- You're an anonymous voter id to us, nothing more.
- Results are only ever shown as totals. Nobody can see how you voted.
- We keep IP addresses for 7 days, only to stop cheating.
- No advertising, no tracking you across other apps or sites, and we never sell data.
- You can delete your data at any time, in the app or on this page.
Who we are
Hang Five Ltd is responsible for your data (the "controller", in data protection terms). We're a company incorporated in England and Wales (company number 17213241), with our registered office at 71–75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ, and we're registered with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), registration number ZC175302. Email us at support@getimpasse.com about anything on this page.
What we collect, and why
Your anonymous voter id
A random id, so you get one vote per question and can see your answers again. In the app it's an anonymous sign-in, kept on your phone. On the web it's a single cookie that lasts a year. We need it to run the game you've chosen to play. We keep it until you delete your data.
Your votes and skips
Each one is stored with your voter id, the time, the platform (iPhone, Android or web), the approximate country of your connection, and the tag on the link you came from, if it had one. We never store a more precise location. We use votes and skips to run the game and count the totals, and the country and link tag to see where players come from and which posts bring them in. Running the game is necessary to provide it; the rest is in our legitimate interest in understanding how the game is used. We keep them until you delete your data.
Questions you suggest
Suggestions from the app are kept for us to review, with your voter id. If we like one, it may become a question in the game; we don't show who suggested it. Please don't put anything personal in a suggestion. If you delete your data, your suggestions stay, with nothing linking them to you.
Your IP address
When you vote, skip or suggest a question, we keep the IP address it came from with your voter id. Our sign-in provider keeps it too when the app signs in. We use it only to spot cheating and abuse, like one person voting thousands of times, which is in our legitimate interest in keeping results honest. We delete it after 7 days.
On the web, a scrambled version is also kept for an hour to limit how many new voters can come from one place, and Cloudflare Turnstile checks your first vote comes from a person, using your IP address and details of your browser. Our providers' security and request logs record IP addresses too, for a few days.
How the game is used
We count things like which questions are seen, how long votes take and when links are shared, using PostHog. The app and the web pages use a random id for this that lasts only until you close them: nothing is stored on your device for analytics, and there are no analytics cookies.
To see whether people come back, our server also tells PostHog when your voter id votes, skips, suggests or shares, along with where you first came from. PostHog is set to throw away IP addresses. We don't use any of it for advertising or combine it with other data. Analytics is kept for up to a year. If you delete your data, what was already sent stays in PostHog until then, but nothing we hold can link it to you any more.
This is in our legitimate interest in making the game better. You can object by emailing us.
Notifications
The daily question reminder is scheduled on your phone. We don't receive anything from it.
On your device
The app keeps its anonymous sign-in, your settings, any votes waiting to be sent and the random install id for app updates. On the web there's one cookie, which holds your voter id. Both are needed for the game to work, so there's nothing to agree to: there are no analytics or advertising cookies.
Who we share it with
Only the companies that run the service for us, under contracts that limit what they can do with your data:
- Cloudflare: hosting, network and Turnstile.
- Supabase: the database and the app's sign-in, in London.
- PostHog: analytics, in the EU.
- Expo: app updates. When the app checks for an update, Expo sees your IP address, the app's version and a random id for your install, which it uses to count installs.
Apple and Google run the app stores and handle what happens there under their own privacy policies. We'd only share anything else if the law required it.
Some of these companies are based outside the UK, or may handle data there. When data leaves the UK, it's protected by the UK's adequacy regulations or by the UK's approved contract terms for international transfers.
Children
Impasse is for people aged 13 and over. If you think a child under 13 has used it, deleting their data in the app or on this page removes it, or email us and we'll help.
Your rights
You have the right to see the data we hold about you, to correct it, to have it deleted, to limit or object to how we use it, and to take a copy with you. Deleting is quickest with the button below or in the app. For anything else, email us with your Player ID, which is how we find your data, since we don't know who you are. It's in the app's Settings, and on the web it appears on this page once you've voted in that browser. Your Player ID can't be used to vote as you, so it's safe to send.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first. You can also complain to the ICO at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, or, if you're in the EU, to your local data protection authority.
Deleting your data
In the app: Settings, then Delete my data. On the web, use the button below. Either way your voter id, votes, skips, link tag and the IP addresses kept with them are deleted at once. The totals you contributed to stay as they are, since they can't be traced to you. Questions you suggested in the app stay, with nothing linking them to you.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll say so in the app too.
